Apple Certified Mac Technician (ACMT) 2018 is a 4-day course that enables participants to become certified to troubleshoot and repair Mac computers. Interactive discussions and hands-on exercises guide participants through macOS setup, maintenance, features, and associated services. Participants also learn how to troubleshoot macOS and Mac hardware and perform repairs on Mac computers. Participants’ knowledge and skills are tested and reinforced by working through real-world scenarios and hands-on labs.
Training for ACMT 2018 is available to technicians who work at or wish to work at Apple-authorized service facilities.
Upon completion of the Apple Certified Mac Technician (ACMT) 2018 course, students will be able to:
- Use Disk Utility to prepare a volume for macOS and describe the macOS installation process using both the Mac App Store and macOS Recovery.
- Identify the proper way to migrate data from one Mac to another using the data migration tools in macOS.
- Identify the power states of a Mac running macOS and describe how to troubleshoot power states on Mac models that don’t have a sleep indicator light.
- Identify the different types of accounts in macOS and describe the capabilities of those accounts, including keychain and password options.
- Identify and describe various security settings for macOS, including Gatekeeper, FileVault 2, Firewall, Firmware (EFI) password, location service settings, and more.
- Describe how to use Time Machine in macOS to create, restore, and manage a secure backup for a customer.
- Describe how to configure and use macOS features, such as Spotlight and Mission Control.
- Use System Preferences in macOS and Apple accessories to configure a wired or Wi-Fi connection to an existing network and securely share data over that network.
- Use tools in macOS to configure online services, such as an Apple ID account, iCloud, Mail, and Continuity.
- Troubleshoot, evaluate, and isolate a given issue with a Mac to learn how to resolve it.
- Given an isolated issue, categorize it as hardware (including accidental damage), software, or environmental, or as an educational opportunity.
- Identify the online resources necessary to ensure that a given Mac model is serviced properly and safely.
- Describe the purpose of specified diagnostic tools.
- Use Apple documentation, approved tools, and appropriate service strategies to safely repair various Mac computers.

- Introduction to Mac Hardware
- Participants will learn ways to differentiate between Mac models and identify general requirements and feature limitations based on hardware features.
- macOS Setup and Maintenance
- Participants learn about macOS installation and recovery. Participants identify the hardware and software requirements for installation, discuss the upgrade and preparation process, and explain hard drive formatting and partition types. Participants also identify top troubleshooting issues and discuss builds and using Apple Service Toolkit for troubleshooting macOS build issues.
- macOS User Accounts
- Participants compare and contrast user account capabilities, add and delete users, and learn about built-in password tools. Participants also discuss keychain passwords and how to resolve keychain password discrepancies.
- macOS Security
- Participants explore the security and privacy features in macOS.
- macOS File System
- In this lesson, participants learn about the default file folders created during a macOS installation.
- macOS Permissions
- Participants identify, describe, and configure different file and folder permissions in macOS. Participants also identify appropriate built-in tools and techniques to help isolate and resolve permissions issues.
- Time Machine
- Participants describe how to use Time Machine in macOS to create, restore, and manage a secure backup for a customer. Participants use Time Machine and explore its features.
- Power Management
- Participants discuss and then perform activities involving power management, including identifying resources and best practices for managing power on Mac systems.
- macOS Networks
- Participants identify how to isolate and resolve environmental, educational, and device issues related to wireless and wired networks. Participants also discuss troubleshooting tools and techniques to use when isolating connection issues related to the Mac. Participants identify different ways to connect to a Mac and to share files, using AirDrop and macOS File Sharing. Participants can configure a Bluetooth device in macOS.
- macOS Troubleshooting Tools
- Participants learn about the troubleshooting tools that are available in macOS. Participants complete mini hands-on labs to practice using various troubleshooting utilities and techniques to resolve issues.
- Troubleshooting Startup
- Participants are guided through the startup process and challenged with relevant customer scenarios and issues that can occur during startup.
- VMI for Mac Devices
- Participants will learn ways to locate and apply the VMI for Mac Portables to identify eligibility of a Mac as in-warranty, out-of-warranty, or ineligible for service.
- Systematic Troubleshooting
- Participants will build upon the Basic Troubleshooting skills learned in Service Fundamentals. The course focuses on Mac-specific troubleshooting concepts and scenarios.
- Repairing all Macs
- Participants identify the various tools and supplies they need to safely service all Mac models. They describe various connector types and determine how to identify and service accidental damage.
- Servicing iMac
- Participants will learn how to identify potential safety issues, service issues to know before opening the device, the necessary tools needed, and the serviceable parts in the iMac 21.5-inch and 27-inch from 2012 to 2017.
- Servicing iMac Pro
- Participants will be able to describe features and accessories of iMac Pro, identify safety precautions, specialized tools, fixtures and procedures required for servicing the iMac Pro by using Apple resources to correctly isolate, evaluate and resolve service issues.
- Servicing Mac mini
- Participants will identify potential safety issues, service issues to know before opening the device, the necessary tools, and the serviceable parts in the Mac mini models from 2012 to 2014.
- Servicing Mac Pro
- In this MacPro Lab course, participants will identify potential safety issues, service issues to know before opening the device, the necessary tools needed, and the serviceable parts in the MacPro from 2012 and 2013.
- Servicing MacBook Pro 15-inch
- Participants will identify specialized tools, fixtures or procedures required to service, safety precautions, and special troubleshooting considerations related to the MacBook Pro 15-inch.
- Servicing MacBook Air
- Participants of this lab course will identify potential safety issues, service issues to know before opening the device, the necessary tools needed and the serviceable parts in the MacBook 11-inch and 13-inch from 2010 to 2017.
- Servicing MacBook
- Participants will identify potential safety issues, service issues to know before opening the device, the necessary tools needed, and the serviceable parts in the MacBook from 2015 to 2016.
- Servicing MacBook Pro 13-inch
- Participants will identify potential safety issues, service issues to know before opening the device, the necessary tools needed, and the serviceable parts in the MacBook Pro 13-inch from 2012 to 2016.
- Servicing MacBook Pro 15-inch
- Participants will identify specialized tools, fixtures or procedures, safety precautions necessary to service, and troubleshooting considerations related to service a MacBook Pro 15-inch model.
